To be / Have / Can

A1 (Elementary) Grammar Kids

This lesson introduces and practices three essential English structures — to be, have got, and can — through engaging, character-based tasks. Students work with a set of characters (Liam, Ava, Amelia, Leo, Mia, Luca, Jack, Fluffy, Bobby) and use them as a context for grammar practice.

Lesson Focus:

  • To be (am/is/are): Identifying and describing people, making positive and negative sentences, and asking/answering simple questions.

  • Have got / Has got: Talking about possessions and physical features; forming affirmative, negative sentences, and questions.

  • Can / Can’t: Expressing abilities and possibilities through characters’ actions.

Activities:

  • Fill-in-the-gap tasks with characters’ descriptions.

  • Making affirmative and negative sentences.

  • Asking and answering simple personal questions.

  • Creating original sentences about friends, family, or pets.

  • Interactive online practice links (Wordwall, Genially).

Skills Developed:

  • Grammar accuracy (form of to be, have got, can).

  • Speaking (personalized Q&A).

  • Writing (sentence building).

  • Vocabulary (appearance, colors, emotions, abilities, pets).

Outcome:
By the end of the lesson, students can describe themselves, their friends, and animals using to be, have got, and can in both positive and negative forms, as well as ask and answer simple questions.
