General Information: This activity presents sentence starters that all conclude with the conjunction "but...". Students are tasked with completing these sentences in a meaningful and contextually relevant way.
The activity includes a series of incomplete sentences, such as "I wanted to go to the park, but..." and "She bought a new dress, but...".
Aim:
- To practice sentence construction and the use of the conjunction "but" to express contrast, exception, or unexpected outcomes.
- To stimulate creative and flexible thinking.
- To encourage students to consider different possibilities and logical connections between clauses.
Ways to Use in Class:
- Individual Completion and Sharing: Students complete the sentences independently and then share their unique endings with the class, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Pair/Group Storytelling: Students work together to build a narrative by each contributing a "but..." clause, promoting teamwork and imaginative storytelling.
- Improvisation Exercise: The teacher provides a sentence starter, and students take turns orally adding "but..." clauses to create spontaneous and humorous scenarios.
- Debate Preparation: Some sentences can be used as prompts for mini-debates, where students argue for different outcomes following the "but."
- Extended Writing Task: Students choose a completed sentence as a springboard for a more detailed paragraph or short story, enhancing their writing depth.
