I'm at the zoo! Lesson 2 (Summer lessons for kids)

A2 (Pre-Intermediate) Grammar Vocabulary Kids

This is the second lesson of the summer course for kids. This exciting lesson takes young learners on an adventure to the zoo, focusing on vocabulary, descriptive language, and comprehension about animals.

The tasks:

  • Warm-up/Prior Knowledge Activation: The lesson begins with an interactive segment where kids recall facts about "home" and planets, setting a playful tone for the learning adventure.

  • Animal Vocabulary Identification: Children engage in a "What is that?" activity, where they identify animals by unscrambling their names and matching them to pictures. This task enhances animal recognition and spelling.

  • Personal Connection and Sharing

  • Animal Description

  • Verb Usage for Animal Abilities: This activity involves completing sentences with verbs to describe what different animals "can" or "can't" do, strengthening grammar and comprehension of animal actions.

  • Reading Comprehension and Gap-Filling: Kids read short texts providing descriptions and fun facts about specific animals and then complete the gaps by identifying the correct animal. This task develops reading comprehension and information extraction skills.

  • Information Recall: A character named Jonny asks questions about animal facts learned in the previous reading segments, encouraging active recall of information.

  • Sentence Structure and Matching: Children work on matching sentence halves, further reinforcing their understanding of animal characteristics and facts.

  • Information Organization and Synthesis: A table format is used to help kids categorize and organize information about animals based on their description, habitat, diet, and a fun fact. This task involves finding missing information and creating new descriptions, promoting organizational and synthesis skills.

  • Creative Task: Students make their own texts based on the information from the table.

  • Vocabulary Reinforcement and Matching: The lesson concludes with a task that helps children solidify their knowledge of animal names and actions, likely by matching descriptions of what animals "can" do with their corresponding actions.
