Continue the story (Halloween)

A2 (Pre-Intermediate) B1 (Intermediate) Teens Speaking Adults B2 (Upper-Intermediate)

Students read the beginning of short Halloween-themed stories that end at a suspenseful or funny moment. Their task is to imagine and write their own endings — what happens next? They can work individually or in pairs to create creative, logical, or funny conclusions to each story. Afterwards, students share their endings with the class and compare how differently each story turned out.

Why it’s useful:
This task develops students’ creativity and writing fluency while keeping them engaged with a fun and familiar topic. It helps them practise narrative skills such as sequencing (first, then, suddenly), using past tenses, and descriptive vocabulary related to Halloween. It also encourages critical thinking and collaboration, as students must decide how to make their story endings interesting and logical. Sharing the stories improves speaking confidence and allows for peer feedback in a motivating, light-hearted atmosphere.
